A Message from Jane Goodall

Welcome to our Web site. I hope you enjoy and even join in the many conversations and inspirational stories about endangered species protection and restoration that you’ll find here.

When I first began writing Hope for Animals and Their World I never imagined what a huge and far reaching book this would become:  By the time I finished the first manuscript it was over 700 pages! Clearly this was too unwieldy for a book, and yet the stories and information we gathered were so important and inspiring, it seemed unthinkable to just file them away.

Fortunately our publishers offered to create this Web site so that we could share the many important stories and beautiful photographs that did not appear in the book.

What is really exciting is that it is an interactive site. We shall be including updates from some of the amazing field biologists and others who have contributed their experiences so generously. And there will be an opportunity for including comments and new stories submitted by scientists and members of the general public who are working to rescue and protect the endangered animal and plant species of the planet.

A Worldwide Community Rescuing Endangered Species
The stories shared here and in the book illustrate the resilience of nature, and the persistence and determination of the men and women who have fought – sometimes for decades – to save the last survivors of a species, refusing to give up. The stories also show how one determined and passionate individual can inspire others so that, together, they can play a major role in saving a species.  We plan to showcase the efforts of young people who are working to save endangered species around the world. In particular we shall highlight the projects of the Jane Goodall Institute’s youth program, Roots & Shoots.

In the “What You Can Do” sections of our book and Web site you will find numerous resources and ideas for how you too can help to protect endangered animals and plants.

We have inflicted so much harm on our planet. Now it is essential that we get together and do what we can to save and protect endangered and threatened animals and plants and their habitats, and to restore damaged environments. What better way for us to join forces than the worldwide Web, where we can share inspirational stories and ideas as to how we can best work together for the future of planet earth.
